MUSIC PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS

From 1997 through to 2004 Nigel Buxton embarked on a series of works based on musical scores. Two operas in particular inspired these works: Alban Berg's 'Wozzeck' and Bela Bartok's 'Bluebeard's Castle'.
It was the dramatic nature of these two pieces which gave rise to the desire to visually transcribe the intensity of the listening experience.

Some of the paintings and drawings are single works others were produced in series.

The playwright Stuart Hoar wrote an article about Nigel Buxton's these paintings:
   'Opera and Painting: Nigel Buxton'

(In 1996 Buxton's 'Bluebeard's Castle' paintings were projected as part of the staging of the opera by the Auckland Philarmonia in association with NBR New Zealand Opera.)
